ANALYSIS: "Social Media"

Project Description:

I will be conducting a research about one of the new media technology "Social Media". This research will include a detailed analysis on how social media has positively and negatively impact the society since the inception. In addition, I'll discuss some perspectives such as sociological, economical and technological while incorporating the idea of 5c's.

Wiki VS Blog

In simple plain english, Wiki is a form of new media, a platform that allows collaborative efforts from individuals or group of people. It ensures coordination while individuals from virtual (remote) locations can effectively communicate and add their own inputs. Wiki can be relevant or useful from a business, education or entertainment perspective. Colleagues or co-workers don't necessarily have to be physically present before they can get things done. Also, students who are assigned group projects can save the hassle of where, when and how they've to meet. Lastly, group of friends who plans for summer trips or camp don't have to keep exchanging emails/texts back and forth for checklist; in other words, with the edit and save tab, individuals can effectively communicate, suggest and contribute, regardless of what they want to accomplish.

Blog on the other hand, is another form of new media built on a platform that allow individuals (bloggers) to personalize their own news and share it with the rest of the world while welcome their feedback. Blog in a nutshell is all about news feed. In terms of similarities and differences, both new media provides great avenue for communication and allow feedback; however in terms of content-wise, because blogs are specific to individuals, they are regularly updated and can control what kind of information available to audience while maintaining data integrity; unlike wiki, just anybody can edit the content. One way to think of blogs been used for collaboration is that bloggers often interact with one another; reading other people's blog, give feedback and share links allow them to share ideas. According to the article from InformationWeek News, "Content management systems will always have their place in the publishing world, but they've never been the best tools for business collaboration".
